Defining Theft Crimes

In Wisconsin, theft is defined as the intentional taking and carrying away of another’s property without that person’s consent. Thefts can occur from a person or a business.

Penalties For Theft In Wisconsin

Generally speaking, theft is a misdemeanor offense, though if the value of the property stolen exceeds $2,500, then the penalties increase to a felony offense. Misdemeanor theft carries a maximum penalty of nine months in jail, or a $10,000 fine, or both. The court can also elect to withhold sentence and place a defendant on probation in lieu of imposing a jail sentence or a fine. The penalties for felony theft depend on the alleged value of the stolen property. Additionally, if thefts are committed while armed with a weapon, or against certain classes of people, the penalty can increase to a felony, as well.
